The Boom and Beyond: Translation Talk with Samantha Schnee

  • The Literary Arts Bridge Hanover, NH (map)

Please join us for a reading and conversation with Samantha Schnee about her work in literary translation and translation advocacy.

Samantha Schnee is an award-winning translator from Spanish. Her translation of Mexican poet and novelist Carmen Boullosa’s Texas: the Great Theft was shortlisted for the PEN America Translation Prize, and she was the recipient of a 2023 NEA Literature Fellowship to translate Boullosa’s novel El complot de los románticos. Schnee also received a 2024 fellowship from the American Academy in Berlin, where she translated Irati Elorrieta’s award-winning debut novel, Winter Lights, which won the 2025 Sundial House Prize.

Sam will read from her translations both published and in progress: The Boom Letters (Princeton UP, 2028), Elorrieta’s Winter Lights (Columbia UP, 2027), and a collection of Boullosa’s poetry, Weather Report (Broken Bowl Books, 2026), Book of Eve, among others. She will discuss both the challenges of rendering different Spanishes and prose styles into English and strategies for building a wider readership for translated literature from around the world.
