Please join us for a reading and conversation with Allison Markin Powell about her work in literary translation and translation advocacy. Allison will read from her most recent translation, Kanako Nishi’s international bestseller Sakura, and her forthcoming translation of the International Booker Prize shortlisted author Hiromi Kawakami’s Far from Everywhere. Tess Lewis will moderate.

Allison Markin Powell is an award-winning translator from Japanese, editor, and publishing consultant. She translated Shiori Ito’s Black Box Diaries, which played a central role in Japan’s #me-too movement, a movie of which was screened at the HOP in 2025. As co-organizer and co-host of the Translating the Future conference, Allison helped to draft the Manifesto on Literary Translation and currently represents the PEN America Translation Committee on PEN’s Board of Trustees. She is a founding member of the translator collectives Cedilla & Co. and Strong Women, Soft Power, and maintains the database Japanese Literature in English.
